Emery Soliman.
9:47 PM.
Antipolo.
Dax walked into a quiet coffee shop overlooking the city lights—
Dax’s jaw tightened.
He clenched his fists.
And before he could stop himself,
lumapit siya—
hindi dahil gusto niya—
pero dahil mas nasasaktan siyang umiwas.
At pagdating niya sa harap ni Emery,
tsaka lamang siya tumingin ang lalaki.
At doon tumigil ang mundo.
“D-Dax…”
Dax’s voice came out low, cold, sharp—
parang hindi siya huminga ng dalawang taon.
“So ito pala tayo ngayon.”
Emery swallowed.
“Hindi ko alam na—”
“Hindi mo alam?” Dax leaned forward.
“’Yan din ba sinabi mo noong iniwan mo ’ko?”
Emery closed his eyes, pumikit ng mahigpit,
kunwari kayang hindi masaktan.
Pero Dax saw it.
The guilt.
The fear.
The familiar ache he once loved but now hated.
“I’m sorry,” Emery whispered.
Dax laughed once—
Emery’s eyes glistened.
“Dax… please.”
“Don’t.”
Dax raised a hand, stepping back.
“Huwag mo ’kong pakiusapan na parang hindi mo sinadya lahat ng nangyari.”
Emery trembled.
“Hindi mo naiintindihan.”
“Hindi ko naiintindihan?” Dax snapped.
“Iniwan mo ’ko nang walang paliwanag.
Walang text.
Walang tawag.
Walang kahit ano.”
Emery shook his head violently.
“Dax, may dahilan ako—”
“Then bakit ngayon ka lang bumalik?” Dax’s voice cracked—barely, but Emery heard it.
Emery looked down.
“Dahil… hindi ko alam kung may karapatan pa ’kong lumapit.”
“You don’t.”
Dax’s answer came quick, sharp, automatic.
Emery bit his lip.
“Pero lumapit pa rin ako.”
“And that’s the problem.”
A long silence between them.
Emery…
looked like a man carrying a ghost.
“Dax,” he whispered softly.
“Kamusta ka na?”
“Do not ask me that.”
Dax’s voice was a knife.
“Wala kang karapatang magtanong sa buhay kong hindi mo naman pinili.”
Emery shut his eyes.
Nasaktan.
At deserve niya.
Pero Dax wasn’t done.
“You look different,” he muttered.
“Mas payat. Mas pagod.”
Emery didn’t speak.
“You okay?”
Dax froze.
“For two years… tanging pangalan mo ’yung hindi ko kayang bitawan,” Emery trembled.
“Kahit araw-araw akong pinapaalala ng sarili ko kung bakit kailangan kong umalis.”
“Kailangan mong umalis?”
Dax scoffed.
“’Yan ang best excuse mo?”
“Dax—”
“Kasalanan ko ba?”
Dax’s voice shook.
“Kasalanan ko ba kaya ka umalis?”
Emery covered his mouth, voice breaking.
“Huwag mo ’kong tanungin ng ganyan…”
“Bakit?”
Dax leaned closer.
“Hindi ka marunong sumagot?”
“Dahil kung sasagutin ko,” Emery whispered painfully,
“mas masasaktan ka.”
Dax slammed a hand on the table—not loud, but enough to make Emery jump.
“MAS NASAKTAN NA AKO.
Mas nasaktan ako noong araw na ’yon kaysa sa kahit anong sasabihin mo ngayon.”
Emery wiped his tears, shaking.
“Dax, hindi mo naiintindihan—”
“Then ipaintindi mo sa ’kin!” Dax snapped.
“Dalawang taon kitang hinintay para ipaintindi.
Ngayon pa ba ’ko mawawalan ng karapatan malaman bakit mo ’ko giniba?”
Emery’s shoulders fell.
He looked at Dax with eyes full of something that hurt deeper than betrayal:
Love that never died.
Love he tried to bury.
Love he couldn’t kill even if he wanted to.
“Hindi ako umalis dahil ayaw na kita,” Emery whispered.
“Huwag mong isipin ’yon kahit kailan.”
“Then bakit?”
Emery opened his mouth—
pero like always,
he shut himself again.
“No.”
Dax leaned back, shaking his head.
“Hindi mo pa rin kayang sabihin.”
Emery looked down, biting the skin of his thumb out of habit.
“Dax…”
“No,” Dax said again.
“Kung hindi mo kayang magsalita dito, then let’s end this.”
Emery’s eyes shot up—terrified.
“Dax, please—wag mo ’kong iwan ulit.”
Dax froze at the word ulit.
“Hindi kita iniwan,” Dax whispered.
“Pero ako ’yung naiwan.”
Silence.
Then—
“Hatid kita,” Dax said suddenly, voice tight.
“H-ha?”
“Gabi na.
At mukhang hindi mo kayang umuwi mag-isa.”
Emery wanted to refuse.
“…sige.”
SA LOOB NG KOTSE
The tension was suffocating.
Emery sat rigid, hands trembling on his lap.
Dax gripped the wheel hard.
Neither knew what to say—
so the silence said everything.
Finally, Emery whispered:
“Dax… takot ako.”
Dax didn’t look at him.
“Takot saan?”
“Takot makita ka ulit.
Takot kausapin ka ulit.
Takot na makita mong… hindi ko na kayang itago yung mga sugat ko.”
Dax’s jaw clenched.
“Hindi mo kailangang itago anumang sugat mo.”
Emery shook his head.
“Dapat nga hindi kita binigyan ng dahilan para makita ’to sa akin.”
Dax snapped.
“Alam mo kung ano mas masakit?
’Yung pinipilit mo ’kong maniwalang ginawa mo ’to para sa ikabubuti ko.”
Emery inhaled sharply.
“Dax—”
“No.”
Dax looked at him—finally—eyes burning.
“You broke my heart.
You don’t get to tell me it was for my good.”
Emery cried silently.
And for the first time in two years,
Dax felt his own chest fracture again.
Hindi pa pala tapos.
Hindi pa pala siya healed.
Hindi pa pala siya nakalimot.
When they arrived at Emery’s apartment gate,
Emery whispered:
“Aakyat ka ba?”
“No.”
Emery nodded slowly.
Heart sinking.
Pero bago siya bumaba,
Dax grabbed his wrist—tight, trembling.
“Emery…”
His voice cracked—painfully.
“I need to know something.”
Emery couldn’t breathe.
“O-ano?”
Dax swallowed hard.
“May iba ba?”
The question stabbed the air.
Emery’s eyes widened.
His lips parted—shaking.
He looked terrified, betrayed, guilty, heartbroken all at once.
“Dax… wala.
Wala.
Walang iba.”
Dax studied his face—
and he knew Emery was telling the truth.
“Bakit mo tinanong ’yan?” Emery whispered.
“Because you left me like someone who fell out of love,” Dax said painfully.
“And I need to know if you did.”
Emery shook his head violently.
“I never stopped loving you.”
Dax’s breath caught.
Emery’s lips trembled.
“Kaya mo ba ’kong mahalin ulit?”
Dax froze.
His heart roared.
His mind screamed.
His chest ached.
He wanted to say yes.
He wanted to grab Emery.
He wanted to hold him again.
Pero sa halip—
“I don’t know.”
Emery’s face shattered.
And just when Dax was about to apologize—
the apartment door suddenly opened.
A woman stood there.
Mukha ni Emery.
Pero mas matapang ang mata.
Mas pagod.
Mas puno ng lungkot.
“Emery,” she said,
voice trembling,
“bakit kasama mo siya?”
Dax turned slowly—
confused, tense, alert.
The woman looked between them—
and the devastation in her eyes
felt like a warning.
“Emery…” her voice cracked,
“kailangan mo na sabihin sa kanya.”
Dax froze.
Emery froze harder.
And the woman whispered the line that ended Dax’s world:
“Dax… may dahilan bakit nawala siya.
At hindi ito tungkol sa pag-ibig.”
Emery closed his eyes—defeated.
“Dax…” he whispered,
“…may hindi ka alam.”
“Dax… may hindi ka alam.”
Isang pangungusap.
Isang saglit.
Emery stood there—pale, shaking, caught between fear and guilt.
Please.”
Dax turned slowly, eyes sharp, voice low.
“Sino siya?”
Emery’s throat tightened.
“Si—si Eliana,” Emery managed to say.
“Ate ko.”
Eliana forced a weak smile.
“Hi, Dax. Pasensya na… hindi kita ine-expect ngayon.”
Dax clenched his jaw.
“So magkapatid kayo. Good.
Emery shut his eyes.
“Dax… hindi dito. Hindi ngayon.”
“No.”
Dax stepped forward, voice shaking.
“Ngayon. Dahil dalawang taon na akong naghintay ng kahit anong katotohanan.”
Emery looked like he was about to collapse.
Eliana placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Em… sabihin mo na.”
Emery whispered, broken:
“Hindi ko kaya…”
Dax snapped.
“Then LET ME HEAR IT FROM HER.”
Emery’s eyes shot up—terrified, betrayed, desperate.
“Wag, Dax. Wag sa kanya.”
Eliana exhaled shakily.
“Emery didn’t disappear because he stopped loving you,” she said softly.
“He disappeared because… I needed him.”
Dax frowned.
“Needed him? Why?”
Eliana swallowed hard.
“Because I almost died.”
The wind stilled.
Emery’s entire body tensed.
“Eliana…” he whispered, eyes wide with horror.
But she continued, voice barely steady.
“Two years ago, I had a breakdown—severe. Hindi ko kinaya ’yung pagkamatay ni kuya.
And Emery…
he found me one night…”
Her lips trembled.
“…trying to take my life.”
Dax froze.
Emery’s knees buckled—he grabbed the gate for balance.
“Eliana, please—”
But she shook her head.
“Hindi ko kayang iwan ka ulit ang magsabi sa kanya. Ako na.”
Dax felt his chest hollow out.
Eliana’s voice cracked as she continued.
“If Emery stayed with you…
I wouldn’t be alive.”
Silence exploded between them.
Emery covered his face, quietly shaking.
“Tumigil ka…” Emery begged.
“Dax, ayoko marinig mo ’to…”
“Why?” Dax whispered.
“Because it makes me look selfish?”
“No!” Emery cried.
“Dahil alam kong mas masasaktan ka.”
Dax breathed hard—hurt, shocked, but unable to stop now.
Eliana wiped her eyes.
“Em had to pick me up after work. Bantayan ako sa gabi.
He stopped sleeping.
He stopped writing.
He stopped living his own life…
just to make sure I stayed alive.”
Dax felt his throat lock.
Emery whispered, voice trembling like a wounded animal:
“Kaya ako umalis, Dax.
Kasi kung pipiliin kita…
baka mawala siya.
Baka mamatay siya.”
Dax’s world tilted so violently he had to step back.
Emery reached out—
“Dax, please… pakinggan mo—”
But Dax jerked his arm away.
“You left me…” he whispered, voice breaking.
“…para iligtas ang kapatid mo?”
Emery nodded, crying silently.
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“No.
“So the whole time,” Dax whispered,
“galit ako sa taong nagligtas ng buhay.
Galit ako sa lalaking pumili hindi dahil iniwan niya ako…
kundi dahil may taong mas nangangailangan.”
Emery sobbed.
“Dax, ikaw rin ang kailangan ko…
pero kailangan ko siyang unahin.
Dahil ikaw…
alam kong hindi mo ako buburahin.”
Dax shut his eyes—hard.
That line shattered him to the bone.
“You should’ve told me,” he said, voice trembling with anger and grief.
“Dapat sinabi mo. Kahit isang mensahe. Isang salita. Isang bala ng katotohanan.”
“I know…” Emery whispered.
“Kasalanan ko.
Takot ako.
Takot ako mawala ka.
Takot ako malaman mo ’yung totoo at—”
“And WHAT?” Dax’s voice cracked like thunder.
“Matatakot ako sayo?
Iiwan kita?
Hindi kita tatanggapin?”
Emery flinched, crying harder.
“It was easier to disappear,” he whispered.
“Than to watch you choose between me… and your own peace.”
Dax stared at him with a pain so heavy it looked like he was drowning in it.
“You destroyed me,” Dax whispered—barely.
“Pero ngayon ko lang nalaman na ginawa mo ’yon habang sinasalo mo ’yung mundo ng kapatid mo.”
Emery reached out, voice cracking.
“Dax… hindi ko sinadya.
I loved you.
I still do.
Hindi ko ’yon hininto.”
Dax opened his mouth—
but no words came out.
Not because he hated Emery.
Not because he didn’t love him.
Pero dahil ngayon…
finally…
lahat ng galit niya
lahat ng akala niya
lahat ng hinanakit niya
collapsed into one aching truth:
Emery didn’t leave because he stopped loving him.
Emery left because he loved too many people at once.
And he chose the one dying.
Dax whispered, shattered:
“Ba’t hindi mo ako hinayaang tulungan ka?”
Emery sobbed harder.
“Dax… you were my safe place.
Dax shook his head violently.
“Putang—Emery, that’s the POINT!”
His voice exploded.
“If you loved me…
dapat hinayaan mo ’kong saluhin ka.”
Emery covered his mouth, collapsing into tears.
“I know.
Ngayon ko lang narealize na mali.
Ngayon lang.
Pero huli na…”
He looked up—eyes pleading, destroyed, raw.
“…diba?”
Dax stared at him.
Silent.
Torn.
Shaken to the bone.
Then—
his voice softened, painfully soft:
“No.”
Emery froze.
Dax took a step closer.
“Hindi huli ang mga taong hindi tumigil magmahal.”
Emery choked out a breath, chest collapsing.
“Dax…”
“You should’ve told me,” Dax whispered.
“But you didn’t stop loving me.
Hindi ko kayang baliwalain ’yon.”
Emery stepped closer—
careful, trembling, terrified.
“Anong ibig mong sabihin?”
Dax cupped his face, whispering through clenched teeth:
“It means…
His forehead pressed against Emery’s.
“And that’s why…
I can forgive you.”
Emery broke into sobs, collapsing into Dax’s chest.
Dax held him—tight, desperate, shaking.
For the first time in two years,
they weren’t running.
They weren’t lying.
They weren’t pretending.
They were just two men
who refused to stop loving each other
even when the world tried to break them.
Eliana smiled weakly from the door.
“Finally… pwede na akong hindi maging hadlang.”
Dax pulled Emery closer.
“No one was a hindrance,” Dax whispered.
“Circumstances lang.”
Emery looked up—eyes swollen, voice small.
“Dax… mahal mo pa ba ako?”
Dax held his face gently.
“Mahal kita kahit sinubukan kong kalimutan ka.”
Tears fell again.
“Dax…”
“And if you still want me,” Dax whispered,
“then this time…
huwag ka nang bitaw.”
Emery nodded—sobbing.
“Hinding-hindi.”
Dax pulled him into a kiss—
soft, trembling, full of everything they survived.
And under the dim apartment light,
Dax whispered against his lips:
“The promise you forgot…
I kept.”
“And the love you kept…
I’m finally ready to return.”
THE END.
