“Aris…”

Vale.

Vale Iñigo.

Three years after he walked away.

Three years after leaving without a word.

Three years after the biggest fight of their lives.

At ngayon—

nakatayo sa harap niya.

Doon kung saan dapat wala na siya.

Aris froze.

“Ikaw?”

“Hi…”

Aris inhaled sharply, cold and harsh.

“Why are you here?”

Vale swallowed.

“Pwede ba tayong mag-usap?”

“No.”

Diretso.

“Aris, please…”

Vale’s voice cracked.

“I’m not here para guluhin ka.

Pero kailangan kita.”

Aris laughed—short, bitter, wounded.

“Kailangan?

Three years kang nawala.

Three years, Vale.

Tapos ngayon, kailangan mo ako?”

“I’m sorry.”

“Wala akong pakialam sa sorry mo.”

Vale looked down, shoulders trembling.

“I deserve that,” he whispered.

“Pero Aris… wala na akong ibang pupuntahan.”

Aris clenched his jaw.

“Not my problem.”

“Aris…”

Vale lifted his eyes—

and for the first time in years,

Aris saw the same gaze na hindi niya natutunang kalimutan.

Weak.

Lost.

Asking.

Tumama iyon sa dibdib niyang pilit niyang pinatitigas.

Isang kulog.

Isang kidlat.

At biglang sumabog ang lakas ng ulan.

Vale covered his head, nanginginig.

“Please… kahit sandali lang.

Kahit dito lang sa lobby.”

Aris shut his eyes.

Damn it.

He hated this.

He hated that seeing Vale cold, wet, helpless…

did something to him.

He hated that part of him still cared.

He hated that the world seemed cruelly timed—

as if pinipilit silang magkita.

Fine.

One minute.

One f*cking minute.

Aris sighed harshly.

“Get inside.”

Vale blinked.

“S-sige?”

“Before magkasakit ka diyan.

Hindi dahil gusto kitang makita.”

Vale nodded, hugging himself.

But Aris saw it—

the relief.

The quiet, painful relief.

LOBBY

10:03 PM

Tahimik.

Aris spoke first.

“Say what you need to say.”

Vale bit his lip.

“I shouldn’t have left.”

Aris scoffed.

“No shit.”

Vale winced.

“I’m serious, Aris.

Aris’ eyes narrowed.

“You didn’t have to disappear.”

“I didn’t know how to stay.”

There it was—

something painful, honest, and familiar.

Aris felt his stomach twist.

“You walked away,” Aris said softly but sharply.

“Para kang nag-evaporate.

One argument—just one—tapos naglaho ka.

Like none of it meant anything.”

“It meant everything.”

Vale’s voice wavered.

“Yun ang problema.”

Aris clenched his fists.

“Then bakit mo ’ko iniwan?”

Vale looked at him—

shaking, drowning, trying not to break.

“Because loving you hurt too much.”

Aris froze.

And Vale froze the moment he realized he said it out loud.

Shit.

That was the line neither of them was ready for.

Aris swallowed hard.

“You… loved me?”

Vale laughed bitterly through his tears.

“Aris, kita mo lang ngayon?”

Aris looked away immediately.

Damn it.

Damn you, Vale.

Why now?

Why say it now when everything is already broken?

Vale wiped his face, voice trembling.

“Every day, pinipilit kong kalimutan ka.

Pero kahit saan ako pumunta…

kahit anong gawin ko…”

he looked up—eyes shining with the kind of pain Aris never forgot,

“…ikaw ’yung hindi ko matakasan.”

Aris’ heart pounded violently.

“Stop,” he whispered.

“Why?” Vale asked.

“Because it’s too late?”

“Yes,” Aris snapped.

“It IS too late.”

“Then bakit ka galit?” Vale shot back.

“Kung hindi ka na affected—kung hindi mo na ’ko mahal—

dapat wala ka nang pakialam!”

Aris slammed his hand on the chair’s armrest.

“Because I waited for you!”

Vale’s breath caught.

“I waited,” Aris hissed.

“Akala mo ba hindi kita hinanap?

Akala mo ba wala akong hinintay na mensahe, tawag, kahit anong paliwanag?”

Vale felt his chest break open.

“Aris—”

“You don’t get to walk back into my life,” Aris said, voice shaking with anger and heartbreak,

“at sabihing kailangan mo ako.”

“But I do,” Vale whispered, voice trembling.

“Kailangan kita.”

Aris stood up abruptly.

“I don’t care.”

He turned his back, refusing to let Vale see the tears threatening to fall.

But then—

“Aris…”

Vale’s voice cracked—

“…wala na akong oras.”

Aris froze.

Very slowly, he turned around.

“What?”

Vale inhaled shakily, eyes filling again.

“I came back because…”

his voice dropped, trembling,

“…may sakit ako.”

Silence.

Cold.

Sharp.

Unbreathable.

Aris stepped closer, stunned.

“What… sakit?”

Vale looked at him with a kind of sadness that kills.

“I didn’t want to tell you.”

He almost choked.

“Ayaw kitang abalahin.

Ayaw kong isipin mong drama lang ako.”

“Vale…” Aris whispered, voice breaking,

“…what kind of sakit?”

Vale smiled weakly—

the saddest smile Aris had ever seen.

“’Yung… hindi na ako sigurado kung matatapos ko ang taon.”

The words stabbed Aris straight through his chest.

His knees went weak.

His world tilted.

And Vale whispered—

“Kung kailan huli na ang lahat…

doon ko nalaman na minahal kita nang totoo.”

Aris couldn’t speak.

And Vale couldn’t hold back anymore.

He stepped closer—

one step

two steps

until he was inches away.

“Sorry kung ngayon ko lang sinabi…”

Vale whispered through tears,

“…pero ikaw ang huling gusto kong makita.

Kahit alam kong hindi mo na ’ko mapapatawad.”

Aris stared at him, breath shaking, hands trembling.

“Vale…”

He could only manage one word.

One breath.

One break.

But Vale forced a small, dying smile.

“At least ngayon…

alam mo na.”

And as he stepped back—

Aris whispered the softest, most shattered voice:

“Don’t go.”

Fade to black.

“Don’t go.”

A word born straight out of fear.

“Aris…” Vale whispered,

“…huwag mong gawin ’to.

Aris shook his head.

“Hindi kita pinipigilan dahil naaawa ako.”

“Then why?” Vale demanded, eyes swelling again.

“Bakit ngayon?

Bakit nung kaya mo pa ’kong habulin, hindi mo ginawa?

Bakit nung umalis ako, hinayaan mo?

Bakit nung kaya mo pa kong pigilan… wala kang sinabi?”

Aris stepped closer—

eyes burning, voice shaking like a storm.

“Because I thought you didn’t want me.

I thought… you were tired.

I thought ako yung mali.”

“And now?” Vale whispered painfully.

“What do you think now?”

Aris swallowed hard.

“Now I think…”

his voice cracked—

“…I’m losing you before I even got the chance to love you properly.”

Vale’s chest collapsed.

“Late na, Aris.

Huli na lahat.”

“Then let me catch up.”

Aris’s voice hardened, desperate.

“Please.”

Vale laughed through his tears.

“Hindi mo ’ko dapat pinipili dahil mamamatay ako.

Hindi ’yan love.

’Yan ay guilt.”

Aris snapped.

“Huwag mong sabihing hindi kita mahal.”

Vale froze.

Aris stepped even closer—

their foreheads inches apart.

“I loved you,” Aris whispered,

“long before I understood what that meant.

Vale’s lips trembled.

“You never said anything…”

“Because you left!” Aris fired back.

“And when you left, I thought ibig sabihin ay hindi ako sapat.”

Hindi nakasagot si Vale.

“Pero ngayong bumalik ka—

at sinasabi mong wala ka nang oras…”

Aris’s eyes flooded.

“…hindi ko matanggap.

Hindi ko matatanggap.”

Vale shook his head, voice soft.

“Aris, hindi mo ’ko kayang iligtas.”

“I’m not trying to save you.”

Aris cupped his face—gentle, trembling.

“I’m trying to love you.”

HOSPITAL –

4 DAYS LATER

7:45 PM

Si Vale ay naka-confined.

Tests.

Scans.

Bloodwork.

Aris never left his side.

Not once.

Not even when Vale insisted.

Not even when he tried to push him away.

One night, Vale sighed.

“Aris…”

namumula ang mata niya, pagod at maputla,

“…hindi mo kailangang dito matulog araw-araw.”

“Yes, I do,” Aris said firmly.

“You don’t owe me anything.”

“I know.”

“Then bakit mo ’to ginagawa?”

Aris leaned forward, elbows on knees, staring right into Vale’s eyes.

“Because this time…

hindi na kita pakakawalan.”

Vale’s throat tightened.

“You’re going to get tired of me.”

“No,” Aris said, without hesitation.

“I’m tired of losing you.”

Then an argument erupted—

one filled with fear, pain, and truths they held for years.

“Hindi mo kaya ’to!” Vale snapped.

“Hirap pa nga ako huminga minsan—ayoko maging pabigat!”

“You’re not a burden!” Aris shot back.

“Kailangan mo ng normal na buhay!”

“I don’t want normal!”, Aris exploded.

“I want YOU.”

Vale’s breath hitched violently.

“…even if I break?” Vale whispered.

Aris looked at him with a fierceness he never showed anyone.

“Then I’ll break with you.”

Vale shook his head, tears falling.

“Ano ba’ng ginagawa mo, Aris…

pinapalala mo lang.”

“No,” Aris said softly,

“binabalik ko lang yung dapat noon pa.”

Vale closed his eyes—

fighting, losing, drowning.

“Aris…”

his voice cracked,

“…natatakot ako.”

Aris held his hand.

“Me too.”

“And what if—”

Vale swallowed—

“—what if hindi na ako gumaling?”

Aris squeezed his hand tighter.

“Then I’ll stay until I run out of breath.”

Vale cried.

Hard.

Ugly.

Painfully.

And Aris pulled him into his chest, letting him shatter.

For the rest of that night,

Aris held him like the world was ending.

Because maybe it was.

NEXT MORNING

11:02 AM

A doctor entered.

“Good news,” she said gently.

“Nakita na namin ang cause. Treatable siya. Mahaba ang proseso, pero hindi hopeless.”

Vale covered his mouth, tears falling again.

“A-Ano po?”

“Treatable,” the doctor repeated with a warm smile.

“You’re not dying, Vale.

Vale looked at Aris.

Aris looked at him back.

And for the first time in weeks—

Hope glimmered.

PAGKALABAS NG DOCTOR

Vale didn’t speak.

He stared blankly ahead—

shock, relief, disbelief swirling in his eyes.

Aris slowly approached.

“Vale…”

Pero hindi gumalaw si Vale.

Hanggang sa unti-unti siyang tumingin kay Aris.

“I’m not dying…”

he whispered, voice trembling.

“Aris… buhay pa ’ko.”

Aris smiled—

soft, relieved, glowing.

“Yes.

You’re alive.

You’re staying.”

And that broke Vale.

He sobbed so hard his shoulders shook.

Aris knelt beside the bed, hugging him tightly, whispering:

“You’re staying with me.”

Vale clung to him like his life depended on it.

“Aris…”

he whispered through tears,

“…ngayon ba… pwede na kita mahalin?”

Aris cupped his cheeks, wiping his tears.

“Ngayon, bukas, hanggang tumanda tayo.

Oo.

Pwede.”

Vale laughed, crying harder.

“You’re so stupid,” he whispered.

“Pero mahal kita.”

Aris smirked softly.

“Good.

Kasi matagal na kitang mahal.”

Then finally—

after years of almost, of pain, of missed chances—

Aris leaned forward.

Their foreheads touched.

Their breaths trembled.

Their hands intertwined.

And Aris whispered:

“You came back when everything felt too late…

pero hindi ako magsasayang ng second chance.”

Vale’s voice cracked.

“Aris…”

Aris kissed his forehead—

a promise,

a prayer,

a beginning.

“Kung kailan huli na ang lahat…”

Aris whispered,

“…doon kita minahal ng totoo.”

Vale closed his eyes, crying silently.

“At ngayong may oras pa tayo,” Aris added,

voice breaking,

“…hindi na kita bibitawan.”

Vale held him tighter.

“Hindi na rin kita iiwan, Aris.”

And in that small hospital room—

two men finally learned how to love

without fear,

without hiding,

without running.

THE END.
